W.H.A.C.K. is Olin's Weapons Handling and Combat Kakistocracy, or "Fencing-and-stuff Club" to the more mundane. While our main activity is fencing, we've also dabbled in boffer weapon combat, are looking in to archery, and are probably open to further suggestions.

News

New weapons came in this Monday! WHACK now is in posession of:
  • Epées, 2R, 2L, Russian
  • Sabres, 2R, 2L (not that the difference is obvious to us yet)
  • Electric foil competition equipment, 2R weapons, 2L weapons, 2 lamées(mens 42 & 46)
So that's really cool. SteveW taught us basics of epée parries 4 and 6 on Tuesday, and in the process, a breadth-first sort of look at arm extension, stopthrusts, wrist angle, en garde, and various other goodies.

There's a list of stuff-to-do up in the fencing room, with stars next to things that can happen during break, if people are bored -- we'd like to get a weapons rack up, since the epées and sabres don't hang so well from marker trays(see steve, mark or katie for general plans); we'd like to continue repairing equipment; get the tape off the floor from the play; a zillion other small projects. Have a good break, all!

This is totally belated, but I just updated the frontpage to reflect the schedule changes we made at the beginning of the semester. Other things that've happened:
  • We're purchasing two sets of competition equipment for foil(1R, 1L).
  • We're purchasing a few(2R, 2L) practice weapons in epee and sabre.
  • We're continuing self-instruction for this semester, but will be looking for outside instruction in the fall.
10/27/03
First: We have secured our old spot in Olin AC 209! Future practices will meet there. Second: We have submitted a line-item request for boffer weapon building supplies, and to fill out our fencing equipment collection. Stay tuned for a boffer-building party, and a call for measurements -- we'll hopefully be assigning everyone their own set of gear to use for the year.

10/07/03
We may be moving to Webster Center soon, if we can manage to remember to call them and schedule time. This will require some minor schedule changes to fit our schedule around the current use of studio space. Stay tuned.

9/12/03
Wellesley's fencing squad is doing "Captain's Practices" from 4-6 every day except Thursdays. Jerzy, Mark, and Katie went over there today... they do an awesome workout. We're looking in to further interacting with them -- they don't get to handle blades until October, while we have little experience and practically no equipment... that sort of thing.

We will start doing conditioning with SMAC Saturday mornings from 10-10:30 or so, after their judo class Saturdays at 9.

9/3/03
There will be no practice Wednesday evening(tonight) due to the discussion of Natural Capitalism.

8/29/03
Meeting results: Practices(foil) will be thus:
  • Tuesdays 7PM-9PM
  • Wednesdays 7PM-9PM (adjusted as necessary for Firesides)
  • Fridays 7PM-9PM
  • Saturdays 10AM-12PM
These times will be adjusted once we settle into our schedules for the semester.

First practice: Tuesday Septemeber 2 from 8PM-10PM(allows for freshman fire safety session)

In other news, we had good turnout for sophomores, and an awesome group of new freshmen(some of whom even have foil experience) with a couple people having archery skills. We'll be looking into this for future expansion of weapons used by WHACK.
By a show of hands, we had 17 people interested in fencing foil, and 12 interested in doing some things with boffer weapons. We'll discuss the boffers in further detail after Tuesday's practice.
(phew!)

8/28/03
Dinner meeting Friday(tomorrow) evening, 7PM. Bring your class schedules -- we're making a first attempt at setting up practice times. Also, there will probably be news from Thursday's CCO meeting about the club fair.

8/14/03
A new year is beginning! Stay tuned for details about this year's activities, including:
  • The first club meeting of the year
  • Club leadership changes
  • Practice schedule
  • Ideas on where to find instruction(Wellesley, Brandeis, MIT, local clubs, ???)
Beyond that, we're just killing time till the fall...
